Reset Cisco Switch to Factory Defaults through CLI

Overview:
This is a step by step walk through on how to reset a Cisco edge switch to factory defaults.

  1. Connect your serial cable to the switch and open a serial terminal for configuring the switch before powering on the switch.
  2. Boot switch while holding down Mode button on the front of the switch until the SYST light flashes amber.
  3. Once you get the “switch:” prompt, enter and run “flash_init”.
  4. Enter and run “del flash:config.text” and confirm with “y”.
  5. Enter and run “del flash:vlan.dat” and confirm with “y”.
  6. Enter “boot” to reboot the switch to a clean configuration.

If you get a prompt, once the switch boots, asking if you want to start an initial configuration, the switch is at default.
